Understanding Hydraulic Hammers and Breakers in Construction

In the construction realm, hydraulic hammers and breakers are indispensable machinery employed for construction and demolition. These tools can break up rock, dig holes, or churn earth to make drilling easier and are often paired with skid steers, compact excavators, loader backhoes, and large excavators.

Hydraulic hammers drill blasting holes for quarry operations, drive piles for building or fence foundations, and plunge steel rods deep into the ground. They also demolish old structures, roads, or vehicles. The hammer’s power is determined by the size of the compression chamber and the pressure applied to the fluid within.

How Does a Hydraulic Hammer Work?

French mathematician and inventor Blaise Pascal made notable contributions to mathematics, geometry, and mechanical engineering. The hydraulic hammer emerged from his discovery of Pascal’s Law, which states that pressure applied to one part of an enclosed liquid results in equal pressure being applied everywhere within.

When high pressure enters the chamber, the lower side of the piston faces the chamber, altering the flow direction. The chamber and low-pressure circuit reverse the piston’s action. The lower side now experiences greater force, causing the piston to rise gradually, compressing the gas in the gas chamber.

The valve begins to lift as the piston rises and oil enters the chamber due to the area difference between the valve’s upper and lower faces. When the valve rises, high pressure enters the chamber for piston reversion. The piston descends due to the area difference, with the gas pressure in the gas chamber accelerating its speed.

The piston strikes the chisel as it accelerates downward. Oil enters the chamber during the piston’s descent and is converted to low pressure upon reaching the chamber. The chamber pressure supporting the valve is reduced, but pressure inside the chamber remains high. Consequently, the valve lowers, reestablishing the state that enables continuous chisel striking.

The Types of Hydraulic Hammers

Hydraulic hammers are classified into three types: Small Class, Medium Class, and Large Class.

  • Small Class

The smallest models are ideal for indoor remodeling, breaking concrete for minor repairs, digging fence posts, and traveling more swiftly than larger models while using less PSI. Small-class hydraulic hammers are efficient and quick for suitable operations.

  • Medium Class

The most common hydraulic hammers fall into the medium class, with a PSI range of 2,000 to 3,000. They significantly impact most projects and frequently make contact with the ground. Medium-class hydraulic hammers are used for various utility projects, large concrete tasks, and landscaping stones.

  • Large Class

Large-class hydraulic hammers are reserved for complex tasks like mining or excavation operations. These hammers, with over 2300 PSI, deliver powerful blows less frequently than smaller or medium hammers due to their immense force. They should be operated only with prior experience or under the guidance of an expert.
